Although it’s a small detail, having a default favicon is one of those things on a website that really bugs me. I’m going to show you how you to customize the favicon for your WordPress website or blog – it only take a few minutes!
What is a favicon?
An icon associated with a URL that is variously displayed, as in a browser’s address bar or next to the site name in a bookmark list.
Why is it important to have a favicon?
Similar to your website having a logo, you website also can be identified by it’s favicon. A favicon builds brand awareness and gives your site credibility.
1. Create an Image
Using a design application, create an image that is 16 pixels by 16 pixels. This is the standard size for a favicon image. Save the image as a JPG and name it favicon.jpg.
2. Convert Your Image from JPG to ICO
In order for your image to work as a favicon, the image needs to be converted from JPG to ICO. I always use Dynamic Drive’s converter to convert my files. You’ll see that your JPG is converted to a file named favicon.ico and is saved to your computer.
3. Upload the ICO Image
In your WordPress admin go to Media > Add New and upload the ICO file. Copy the image URL which should look something like:
4. Install the Personal Favicon Plugin
The Personal Favicon plugin is a WordPress plugin that allows you to easily install a favicon without having to go into your site’s head code. You can either download the plugin to your computer and upload to your site, or install it directly from your WordPress site.
After you install the plugin go to Settings > Personal Favicon in your WordPress admin.
Paste the URL you copied from your Media Library into the box Personal FavIcon URL. Select Blog & Admin from the dropdown box for Where to Apply Favicon.
Then click update. You should now have a personalized favicon!
Be sure to clear your browser’s cache if you don’t see the favicon at first!
