Sometimes trying to identify the name of a font you found can be as tricky as trying to find a missing contact lens🕵🏻 . Before you give up, I’m going to share all the ways you can try to identify a mystery font using some online detective skills.
How To Identify A Font From An Image
If you’ve finally found a font that’s perfect for your project but you have no idea what the name of the font is – 🛑 you’ve just hit a major roadblock. Without knowing the exact name of the font, you won’t be able to purchase the font license, or search for the font in a program like Photoshop or Canva.
Luckily, there are some options for you to uncover your mystery font…
1. WhatTheFont Font Finder
Using the WhatTheFont font finder, you can upload an image of the font you’re trying to find out the name of and see the matches that the finder offers up.
After uploading the image you’ll have the option to crop the image or isolate specific text in the image for your search. Here’s how it looks after you upload an image:
After choosing the text I want to identify the font of, here are my results. None of these are the actual font, but it did come pretty close.
2. Matcherator Font Finder
The Matcherator font finder from FontSpring works similarly to the WhatTheFont search, plus it seems to be able to isolate individual letters and a checkbox to choose if glyphs (special shaped letters) in the search.
In looking at the match results, the Matcherator was able to find the exact font used! It is suggested to crop the image into two separate images if there are two fonts being used, like in the “She Social” example above.
3. WhatFontIs.com
If you’re still not able to find out the name of a font, you can try WhatFontIs.com. This site is a little confusing since there are a lot of ads and pop ups – but it does allow you to sort your results by display free or paid fonts. You can also change the brightness and contrast of the image you’re uploading to help make the font more visible.
The results found the exact font used (MADE Sunflower is the name) however I did have to label what each letter was after the image was uploaded.
What To Do If You Still Can’t Find The Font Name
If you’ve tried all of these font identifier tools and still cannot find the name of the font, try reaching out to business or design groups on Facebook to see if someone who is familiar with fonts may know the name.
It’s possible that the font you’re searching for doesn’t exist because it was a custom made font, or hand drawn. In this case, the font search tools can still be helpful since they’ll show you fonts that are similar.
