Having a Showit website for your business can be an amazing thing. You have the ability to fully customize the look of your website and it’s so easy to update images and text. But, you may be making some major mistakes that could be harming your website.
I’m going to walk you through the 5 biggest mistakes you may be making with your Showit website and how to fix them ASAP. Once resolved, these updates can help boost SEO and increase leads through your website.
1. Not Having Proper Page Titles for Every Page
Every page on your website has a page title that comes up in search engine results. This page title isn’t the title you see on your actual page, it’s the title you see in the browser tab. By default, Showit will display name of your page as the page title, unless you customize the page title in Showit.
Q: So why do you want to customize the page titles for your Showit website? A: Too boost your SEO!
Let’s look at example of a page title that’s unedited versus a customized page title.
Without customizing your page title, Showit will use your given page name as the title in the browser page – this is what will show up in Google search as the page title.
Here’s an example of my contact page without customizing the page title. You can see in the browser tab, it only reads “Contact”.
To update the page title in Showit, click on the page you want to edit and then in the right sidebar click SEO Settings. You’ll see two fields which will be blank. Here you can customize the page title that will in Google and also a meta description which will show in search engine results.
Follow the character limit guidelines to fill in your SEO settings and remember to use keywords that someone may use in a Google search to find a business like yours. This update will take a little while to populate on Google and you can always change the page titles and descriptions whenever you wish.
Take a look at my updated page title for the contact page:
⚒️ How to fix: Go through every page on your website and write custom page titles and descriptions for each page. You can use sites like Ahrefs and Google Keyword Planner to help you strategize using keywords that will boost your SEO.
2. Having Broken Page Links
Having a broken link on your website can be a major issue, even with having a 404 page (Page Not Found template). Sure, a custom 404 page is nice to have and you can help navigate any lost users to either your homepage, email list or anywhere else you want them to go.
But wouldn’t you rather know about the broken link so you can fix it and get your viewers exactly where they want to go? Instead of manually checking every single link on your website (who has time for that?) you can enter your URL in the site below and find out if you have any broken links and fix them right away.
⚒️ How to fix: Go to BrokenLinkChecker.com and run an audit on your website. The results will show you any links on your site that are broken so you can repair them right away. This is such a time saver!
3. Not Having Old Pages Forward to New Ones
Sometimes a page on your website isn’t mean to be visible to everyone all of the time. For instance, if you have a special offer that you only want available for a limited time – you wouldn’t want people to accidentally find the page showing that offer. Even if you remove the link to a page from your navigation, it doesn’t mean the page isn’t accessible.
You can setup a forward to a new page and this featured is called redirects. You can find the settings for this in the Domain Configuration pop up box in Showit. First, click Site Settings, then next to your domain click Edit. Then, click the little gear icon and you’ll see an area where you can setup page redirects.
Here you can setup the URL for an old page that no longer exists, to forward automatically to a new page on your Showit site. The page in the old URL field MUST no longer exist in order to forward.
⚒️ How to fix: Check through your list of pages on your Showit website and if any of them are outdated or expired (old offers, old services) you can forward the old URL to a new page on your site.
4. Missing SSL Certificate
If your website traffic isn’t growing and you’ve done all the right things to boost your SEO, make sure you have an SSL installed on your Showit website.
Without an SSL there’s a good chance that people haven’t been able to access your website because their browser security is blocking them. An SSL certificate tells a browser that your website is secure, so no one will be blocked from being able to view it. This is required for any ecommerce sites as well.
To check if you have an SSL installed, type your URL into your browser bar and after the site loads, check to see if there’s either a lock icon next to your URL or if the site information says that the connection is secure. This means you have an SSL!
If you don’t see the lock icon or your connection says unsecure, reach out to Showit to have one installed. You can also check to see if your site has an SSL by going to SSL Checker and typing in your URL.
Here’s how it may look when someone tries to go to your site if you have no SSL. 😳
⚒️ How to fix: First, figure out if you have an SSL or not. If you don’t, reach out to Showit support and ask them to install one for you. It’s included with your Showit account!
5. Broken Contact Form
If you haven’t received a submission from your contact form in quite some time, you may want to double check that it’s working. Not having your contact form setup properly is a major mistake you could be making with your Showit website.
Even if your contact form looks like it’s setup correctly, you need to make sure the button is working properly and the fields have been labeled with the write names.
⚒️ How to fix: Find your contact page and test out your form. Make sure the confirmation message on your website works properly (the message people see after they send a message) and make sure you receive the email test.
Conclusion
There are a lot of important things that keep your website working smoothly and it can be overwhelming as a business owner to stay on top of them. You still need to check in on your website as often as possible to check for broken links, contact forms that aren’t working, enhancing SEO and making sure old pages are no longer accessible.
