One of the features I love the most about Showit are the limitless design possibilities. While dropdown menus are not native to Showit, there is an easy way you can add your own dropdown menu to your navigation.
I’ll walk you through the steps on exactly how to add a dropdown menu to your navigation in Showit without using complex coding. I promise, this won’t want to make your toss your laptop in the dumpster 🤪
Before we get started, I’m Casey and I’ve been a Showit Design Partner since 2020. For years I’ve been building custom Showit websites for my clients, creating gorgeous + functional Showit website templates and teaching people just like you how to update their Showit website. Let’s get started!
Does Showit Have Dropdown Navigation?
The short answer is no. Dropdown menus aren’t native to Showit, meaning there isn’t a simple way to add a dropdown menu. But like I mentioned earlier, the design possibilities with Showit are pretty much limitless, so there actually is a way to add a dropdown navigation.
Are Dropdown Menus Good For My Website?
This really depends on your website needs. In general I like to avoid cluttered navigation, so if adding a dropdown navigation will help your users get where they need go and avoid a cluttered navigation – then go ahead and add one to your site.
Tutorial for Adding a Dropdown Menu in Showit
Here’s exactly how you can add a dropdown to your navigation in Showit.
Step 1: Add a Canvas View
In your main navigation canvas click the three dots (…) and select Add Canvas.
Next, drag all of your navigation links into View 1.
Step 2: Duplicate View 1
Select the three dots next to View 1 and choose Duplicate.
In View 2, you’re going to add the dropdown navigation for your first link. It’s ok if the dropdown menu lays over the canvas below, do not resize your canvas to fit the dropdown menu.
Step 3: Add Link to View 1
Go back to View 1 and select the navigation link that you want to have a dropdown for. Go to the Click Actions tab and select Link Type: Canvas > This Canvas > View 2. Uncheck Scroll to Canvas if that is already checked.
Step 4: Add Link to View 2
Similar to step 3, in View 2 select the same navigation link and set the link to Canvas > This Canvas > View 1. This will turn off the dropdown if the link is clicked.
Step 5: Repeat All Steps for Next Dropdown
For the next link in your navigation that you want to add a dropdown to, you’ll need to create a View 3, View 4 and so on. Each dropdown will be in it’s own canvas view.
What to Know About Dropdown Menus in Showit
This tutorial is intended only for your desktop site. Be sure to turn off the canvas for your mobile site.
Make sure the Stacking Order of your canvas in the Canvas tab is set to be higher than all of the rest of your canvases (I set mine to 100).
